North Atlantic Trade Organization – 1949 – included U.S., Canada, Western European reps, and later Greece, Turkey, and West Germany are added (1951) -an attack against an ally meant a military response by all - led to rearmament of Western Germany S.U. response to NATO, Marshall Plan, and growing U.S. involvement in European was Warsaw Pact (1955). It set up joint command in Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and East Germany and guaranteed continued S.U. troop presence. It ended in 1991.
