Who: the bishop in Song of Roland who fights along side Roland and his soldiers

What:

• He is the second to last one to die after all of Roland’s troop is slaughtered.

• He plays the peacemaker between Roland and Oliver as they fight over whether or not to call Charlemagne

• A warrior as well as a holy man; merciless

When: around 1100

Where: Spain, fighting for Charlemagne

Significance: He represents the religiosity of the times: convert or kill infidels in the name of G-d.
