Bacchic Worship consisted of co-ed, secret rituals devoted to the god Bacchus (greek Dionysus). These rites were of Greek origin, and came to Rome in 186 B.C.E. Fearing the formation of an alternative community, the Senate suppressed Bacchic Worship by requiring that rites and ceremonies be held in public, established religious places.
