Bandung Conference

Held in 1955. Was sponsored by Asian Nationalist countries such as Indonesia, Ceylon, Sri Lanka, Burma. Was attended by 29 nations, including nations such as India, Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, China, Angola, the Philippines, Vietnam. These were basically all third world countries, and most people had no idea there even was a “third world”. Brought up the ideas of pan-Arabism, pan-Africanism, pan-Islam (basically the equivalent of the current EU, but in the nations that fell into each of those categories). The Bandung Conference came to a few conclusions. First, they wanted to share technological developments for economic growth and security. Second, they wanted to work for cultural cooperation, which they said was “the most powerful means of promoting understanding among nations”. Third, they wanted to support the “principles of Human Rights and self-determination of peoples and nations.” They condemned colonialism of all forms, and wanted the nuclear powers to have disarmament negotiations. These countries are some of they countries that would be used in “proxy wars” to come.
