What: Charles Martel led Frankish forces against an invading Muslim force led by Emir Abd er Rahman.

• There was a surprising victory of foot soldiers against the cavalry.
• Rahman was killed and the Muslim forces retreated.

Significance: Set precedent of Carolingian defense of Christian faith, preceded the Franco-Papal alliance.
