Who/What: author of romances, many of them Arthurian romances, includingThe Story of the Grail (Percival), in the Middle Ages; connected to the court of Count Theobald of Champagne (p. 369);

When: 1150-1190

Where: Troyes, France, County of Champagne

Significance: his works represent the courtly culture and ideals connected to courtly conduct; his works such as Lancelot represent both courtly love and chivalry. Many later Arthurian stories are based on those by Chretien de Troyes.
