Hoplite

Who: the Greek farmer-citizen-soldier (infantry); major part of volunteer militia

 

What: had to buy own equipment (panoply): bronze body armor (~70 lb), large shield, and spear;  phalanx; started revolution because they demanded political power for military service; Athenian hoplites defeat Persians at Marathon; Small (~10 acre) family farmers; Work with slaves, no landlords or city-state farm

 

When: Archaic Age- 750-500 BCE

 

Where: Greek city-states

 

Significance: characterized Greek warfare; gave power to poorer men through revolition
