mutually assured destruction

Basically the theory that the nuclear powers should not have a defense, so that if one country launches an intercontinental ballistic missile at another country, that country cannot defend itself and must just shoot one of their missiles at the other country. By not having a defense, both countries are “mutually assured” to be destroyed. In 1983, Reagan proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative, which undermined the concept of Mutually Assured Destruction.
