Who- modernist writers such as conrad in heart of darkness.

What – associated with the modernist movement !! literary technique that seeks to portray an individual's point of view by giving the written equivalent of the character's thought processes, either in a loose interior monologue, or in connection to his or her sensory reactions to external occurrences.

When – late 1800s to early 1900s

Why- stream of consciousness allowed an expression of emotion totake place which was new in the modernist movement. Sense of time and chronology is messed up. Traces a character’s fragmentary thoughts and sensory feelings. Kind of relates to freud because of the fact that he was taking dreams and interpreting them in a stream of consciousness type of way. Represents characters’ thoughts directly.
